Chrissy promised Nathan to always be his "Samwise Gamgee" and Nathan promised to always be her "Mr. Darcy." Are ya feelin' this wedding yet?? Because I nearly swooned during the vows when I heard this. Maybe my corset was too tight...

Everything about this wedding was filled with love and history. They married at their alma mater where they met; married by Nathan's dad; and in all the little details they just honored the decade they had been together.

I was so honored to be a part of their day and to see how much all their friends and family were so excited that they were making their coupledom official and being witness to their day. All weddings should be like Chrissy and Nathan's. Thank you a million times over for letting me share this day!

Elizabeth and Joe were so lucky to be able to get married in an intimate ceremony at the Marymount School in Santa Barbara. Rain? Yes. Dampened spirits? Noooooo! I could tell that everybody had been waiting and waiting for these two to finally get married. Being surrounded by a small gathering of the most important people in one's life is an amazing feeling. I honestly think that the Clark wedding hoedown was the party of the year here in Carpinteria! I was already super excited that I was asked to shoot Jessica and Kevin's wedding (of the awesome Corktree Cellars) but when I heard that it was going to be a hoedown with line dancing, fiddlers, and donkeys-well, that just took it to a new level! You could feel the love and joy permeating from all 350 guests attending. I hope it was everything Jessica and Kevin dreamed! Yee-haw!

As I learned more about Jennifer and Kim how could I not be excited for them as they embarked on this journey together? Jennifer and Kim are both in the armed forces who have served in Afghanistan. Yes, Afghanistan! One is stationed on the east coast while the other is here in California. Unbelievable but shows the determination and love that these two share to make it work. I was so happy to be able to be there and capture their gorgeous beach wedding surrounded by friends and family. I wish them lasting love and safe travels.

Cuba!

Years ago I walked into a used bookstore and casually strolled around eyeing the thousands of books that wanted me to buy them. Nothing caught my eye until I walked passed the travel guide section and saw a tiny book called "Cuba." I thought, "I want to go to Cuba" and bought the book. Of course, going to Cuba isn't as easy as just buying a plane ticket and hopping over. So years went by and I loved looking through the guidebook every so often. Then a few months ago a friend told me about a trip she took to Vietnam chaperoning a few high school kids and how much she loved it. She also happened to mention that the group was planning on going to Cuba and still needed a chaperone. Medium story short, I made a direct beeline for that opportunity and got it!

What can I say about Cuba in short? It's a dichotomy of senses.What my tastebuds didn't like for dinner was made up for the constant live music tingling my ears. What my skin didn't like in hot humid weather, my eyes feasted on old American cars whizzing by as well as the seemingly endless parade of amazing art. I wasn't expecting to love Cuba as much as I did and was sad when we departed back to Miami. Time to plan another trip...

When I first met Robin and John and they described what they wanted out of their wedding, they said,"We want it to be FUN!" And fun it was! A little rain wasn't going to put a damper on this wedding.

Friends and family from all over the country gathered to watch these two join two very independent lives into one. You could tangibly feel how excited everybody was to witness this great union between two great people. It's the type of wedding where I just can't stop smiling while I'm there. Yes, it's that pretty. After a quick stop to get married, they hopped back into their car to enjoy a few days hitting up beach towns up the California coast. A wedding, a car, and a road trip. Sounds heavenly...

I love those moments in life when you think, "This is fate!" I received an email from Jeni in Washington who was going to get married in Santa Barbara. How very odd as I was going to be in the Seattle the following weekend. AND it turns out Jeni was only going to be 20 miles from where I was staying. So what did we do? We met at a Starbucks, of course! Medium story short, they hired me! Yay!

Jeni and Cesar had one of those "perfect weddings" according to a wedding photographer: moderate weather, beautiful getting-ready location, gorgeous scenery, extensive time to take photographs, no drama, and a fun, good-looking couple to cap it all off. :)

I was soooo excited to fly out to Boulder City, Nevada to shoot Anna and Steve's wedding. Simple concept: they're getting married on horses. Simple reaction: AWESOME! Of course, I HAD to capture this wedding. Anna said that she just wanted a casual, fun picnic-no stress whatsoever. How can you not love that? And it was a beautiful day indeed (with a tad of wind and sun) surrounded by a select few close family and friends (and horses) to share the big day. You could feel the love and the excitement from all the guests as they watched these two get married. I am sooooo grateful they let me be a part of their wedding. To many more years of riding off into the sunset together, Anna and Steve!

When the processional music started to announce that Angie was about to walk down the isle, I nearly squealed with excitement. I heard the horns and I immediately knew it was "I Do, I Do, I Do!" by ABBA! I have been waiting 13 years to hear that song play in a real wedding ever since I first saw it in the fabulous movie, "Muriel's Wedding." Fortunately, I recovered and actually took pictures of Angie coming down the isle (instead of the my usual instinct to start dancing). :)

The Mural Room in the Santa Barbara Courthouse is such an amazing place to get married. There are tons of places to get married here but the Courthouse still remains as one of my faves that I never grow tired of shooting. And it was a true "Santa Barbara" wedding as we walked over to the fabulous Canary Hotel and celebrated on the rooftop with all of Santa Barbara as our back drop. It was a magnificent reception filled with much laughter and AWESOME improv by the uber-talented Cora and Tom Danielson. I couldn't imagine Angie and James in want of a better time at their wedding. Congratulations and to many years of amazing happiness!

When I would start taking pictures of Anna, she would say,"I don't know what I should do. I'm not good at this." Well, Anna, I'd like to present these pictures as Exhibit A that you ARE good at this! Sidebar: Anna is an attorney so I had to add that silly comment. :p

It was an awesomely beautiful day at Elysian Park-probably now one of my favorite venues in LA. You don't even realize you're in LA when you're here. A little warm but perfect as the sun went down and provided a relief from all the non-stop dancing inside at the reception. Anna and James have LOTS of friends who have some serious dance moves! I had so much fun at the reception that by the time the night ended I kept thinking, "We should all be total BFFs!"

Anna and James, you two are awesome in a we-don't-mean-to-be-awesome-we-just-naturally-are kind of way. Thank you soooo much for inviting me into your world!

I love meeting a potential couple and we laugh, we chat, and we just CLICK. This is what is was like meeting Lindsay and Michael at the 101 Coffee Shop in Hollywood (a fave cafe of all of us). But it became even more awesome when I received the timeline that specified at 10pm: "Get luche libre masks out for dancing guests". Um, yes, please!

Lindsay and Michael had a smallish wedding on the beautiful vineyard grounds of Justin Winery. It was a mix of bronze, Great Gatsby, luche libre: classy and fun! I think if I made my husband renew our vows I'd copy Lindsay's and Michael's wedding. ;)

When we discussed what Melissa and Devin wanted in their engagement photos they both said, "A day in our life in Santa Barbara." Awesome idea! So on a beautiful sunny day we started out with crossword puzzles in their kitchen, strolled to the delicious C'est Cheese (I seriously can't believe I hadn't eaten here before), played around Center Stage, and ended up among the lavender fields of Santa Ynez. Fun yet relaxing day, I tell ya.

I can't wait 'til these two get married in July! If their wedding is anything like our day hopping around, it will be filled with love, laughter, and ah-MAZING food!

It's the Little Things

I think we can all honestly say that we tend to get onto a rhythm and we follow that rhythm pretty closely. Wake up at 6am, be at work at 6:30, be home by 4pm, dinner at 6pm, and off to bed by 10pm. Sometimes, a few fun things in between but pretty plain vanilla. I must admit I'd been on that routine: answer emails, meet with potential brides, book, get excited about the weddings, get deposits, shoot the weddings, and get excited again when I delivered the images to the couples. Always exciting yet predictably so until today. Today I received the best Thank You note from my upcoming bride, Debra Bagaporo. It made me stop and remember that the wedding day is not only about the couple but also for all the loved ones who are so excited to be there to witness and bless the union. Debra, thank you for the Thank You card and I can't wait for your and Reid's wedding day at Rincon Beach Club this April!

Things that are cute: couples in love and Vespas. Cute couple in love on a Vespa? SUPER CUTE!! Anna and James live in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles and I had so much fun walking around, taking in and documenting their neighborhood. We started out at their home on their awesome Vespa (Roman Holiday, anyone?), walked up the Music Box Stairs (star of Laurel and Hardy's eponymous short film), stopped in to their favorite taco stand, and ended with a pint o' beer at the Thirsty Crow while taking in some live jazz tunes. How can you not love this engagement session?! Anna and James rock my world- I can't wait to capture their wedding day this April!

Just a week prior we were having a heatwave and who wants to have an outdoor wedding in 100+ heat? But the weather had cooled and was a manageable 85 degrees. They got married in front of a beautiful giant oak tree in the backyard of a family friend. Elisabeth and Ryan were surrounded by their closest friends and family with the wedding doing double duty as a last get together in Santa Barbara before they headed off to Anchorage, Alaska to begin their new life together. When Nora said that she loved John Steinbeck and wanted to incorporate that early California feel to her wedding, my jaw dropped. I'm a literature grad so you mention any type of wedding that ties into a book and I'm all yours! You had me at, "My fave book is..." Oh, and it was sooooo "California"! Rockwood Woman's Club is vintage Santa Barbara with its dark wood accents AND it's surrounded by trees, trees, and more trees. So romantic! Valarie and Ray are after my own heart: why not take engagement pictures AFTER you're gotten married?? That's what I did. :) A few months after settling into being married, we headed out to the beautiful Union Station and then to the Disney Hall in downtown Los Angeles. "We met about 6 years ago in Nicaragua where we were both working for a development institute. Rick was working there in cooperation of a NGO and I was volunteering as part of a program coordinated by my university back home in Spain. Back then, there weren't any sparks between us but we stayed in contact thanks to myself for copying Rick's hotmail address and adding him to my messenger list. We kept in touch through out the years, meeting up in different locations since we both shared the love for traveling.

About 2 years ago we realized that our friendship had become more profound and we wanted to be together so 1 1/2 years ago we decided to give it a go. I got on a plane and moved to Nicaragua :-) On 2/8/10(our first anniversary) we got engaged. It was during a flight over Managua (Rick was the pilot) when he popped the question. I accepted & 6 months later we're getting married!!! "

Beth and Dan are a little bit country, a little bit rock 'n roll- a couple after my own heart! They live in Texas but decided to have their wedding here in Santa Barbara at the Hope Ranch Beach and dance the hours away in the picnic grounds. I was FLOORED when Beth told me she did her own makeup and hair. Gorgeous!! She brought a lot of va-va-voom to a casual beach wedding. :) Dan was dashing in his pirate belt and Texas cufflinks. Have I mentioned that you don't mess with Texas (as my Texan dad likes to remind me often)? Emma the Awesome Turns 1!

I can't get over that I've had my little niece, Emma, in my life for a year now!! It seems just like yesterday when I walked into my sister's hospital room and terrified to hold such a delicate baby. My husband had to pick her up and put her in my arms while I sat in a chair- wanted to make sure there was noooo way that I would drop this precious cargo!

I am so in awe being able to watch her grow from this teeny-tiny button to an inquisitive, Willy-Wonka lovin' 1 year old. Best. Year. Ever. I try not to spend money on silly frills and toys on her when instead I could contribute to her 529 college savings plan (Harvard, here she comes) but I had to splurge when I saw the CUTEST tutu custom-made by Tutu Posh for her to wear for her birthday party. And it was a fun party indeed! Happy 1st birthday to my little cupcake and to many, many more!!

Classy. That is simply the best way that I can describe Lorena and Chris. The first time I met with them over a bowl of tortilla soup at the Canary Hotel (they ate, I just drooled), that word kept going through my head. And, after spending a fun hour of laughing with them all I could do was cross my fingers and hope they'd book with me. Well, truthfully, it sounded a little whinier than that and more like, "ooooh, please,please,please book with me! I really, really, really want to shoot your wedding!" Oh, and what a beautiful day it was! A nice warm day filled with sunshine and laughing guests aged 2-90. I couldn't stop smiling! I am sooo lucky that I have the opportunities to shoot weddings in Massachusetts where friends and family still reside. Wicked lucky, actually. ;) I was so honored that Jason whom I've known since he was a college student (let's not discuss how long ago that was) asked if I would shoot his wedding. Taking place at the prestigious Groton School, the ceremony was held in a Gothic revival chapel and friends and family rocked the night away in the dining hall next door. The first time I spoke with Gabriel on the phone I think all we did was laugh about all the celebrities that we're convinced are stalking us here in Santa Barbara. Since that phone call I've been waiting anxiously for their wedding! And what a beautiful, beautiful day it was. The ceremony was held in the historic El Presidio Chapel followed by a true Santa Barbara reception near the beach! Gabriel and Chelsea were surrounded by laughter and love all night and I was so happy to be there to capture it all for them. You're probably looking at the photo and thinking, "Seven rings?" Yup, seven rings. One for each person that this union has joined together. This was the second marriage for Karen and Marvin and they surprised their combined 5 kids with rings during the ceremony. I absolutely loved that during their ceremony, Karen and Marvin acknowledged not only their commitment to each other but also to the new family unit they were creating. I must admit that I became teary eyed as I had never, in all the weddings that I've captured, seen a gesture so sweet and truly reflecting of love between people. Congratulations, Hatch Family!!

Melissa + Jason: Just You, Just Me, Just Us

I always love the initial meeting with clients because I never know on what levels the couple and I will "click". I drove down to Valencia Hyatt one day to meet Melissa and Jason in the lobby. I arrived a little early-just in time to see an Indian wedding in progress! The groom emerged from the hotel lobby and proceeded to climb a bedazzled horse while surrounded by 100 guests dressed in colors not found in nature. I've always wanted to see/shoot an Indian wedding! So, score 1 for Melissa and Jason even though I hadn't even met them!

Melissa arrived with a huge smile on her face (I love smiley people). Randomly, within the first 2 minutes I mentioned a third-season episode of The Office. She looked at me and said that they had been watching season 3 the last few nights. Hmmm...score another point for Melissa and Jason.

As we sat for lunch, what could have been just a conversation of the wedding, photography, and all the other topics that newly-met folks discuss, quickly changed to old stories of being in punk bands on the east coast back in the day. Click,click,click! Score more points for them! I didn't even notice that almost 2 hours has passed. Time flies when you're having fun!

And so, we met again at Justin Vineyard and Winery on May 15th to celebrate their wedding. It was a small gathering of family and best friends on a beautiful day in a beautiful setting. I can't imagine ever growing tired of shooting at Justin.

What? Me, published?!

It started with an email from Kate,"I think our wedding is going to be featured in the SB Independent's annual wedding issue..."

Excuse me?

Let's back up a couple of weeks. I randomly remembered that there was an annual wedding issue this time of year so I shot over an email to the Independent wondering what I needed to do in order to submit a wedding for possible publication. Unfortunately, I was told, that the deadline was in two days. I didn't have time to put anything together. I didn't even get the chance to even get my business listed. Sigh. I'd just have to wait another year.

A long two weeks later, I received an email from Kate stating,"I think our wedding is going to be featured in the SB Independent's annual wedding issue..."

Now, I like to think that I treat people well so I'd like to think that in return karma has thrown this little morsel of good fortune my way. Out of hundreds of wedding photographers and hundreds of weddings shot in Santa Barbara this past year, I had somehow made it to one of only two weddings featured in the wedding issue. Oh, and was it beautiful! Three pages of some of my favorite images from Kate and Adam's wedding!

The Wedding Favor

This time of the year is the lovely time us wedding photographers call the "off-season." It is during this time that I get to not only relax (a little) but also to get re-inspired.

One of my favorite things to do is to find new photographers who inspire me by not only their images but by their philosophy and approach to their work. Recently, one wedding photography couple stands out the most, Dan & Sarah. I am so floored by not only their philosophy about their work but how to give back to their community. I have been so busy thinking about how to build my business that I never stopped to think about how I would give back once I built my business. I suppose I never thought about how a wedding business could "give back." But, 2010 is a new year and I'm excited to incorporate a new manifesto to my business. I am so excited to unveil "The Wedding Favor" package.

This is open to any couple in which one of you work for a social service: schools, hospitals, non-profits, etc. Basically, the favor is that YOU name your price. The package is limited to 6 hours of coverage and a DVD of unlimited images.

If you would like to apply to The Wedding Favor Package, just shoot me an email with "The Wedding Favor" in the subject line.

What I request: email me a quick story at info@cherrythomasphoto.com about why you feel it would be a great blessing to you if I shot your wedding at your price as well as your vision of your wedding day, have a person active in the community with you (co-worker, pastor, etc) provide a referral, and attach a recent photo of yourself and your significant other.

Acceptance of the couple’s named price will be based on the wedding date, location, and referrals.

This will only be limited to ONCE a year starting with 2010. Of course, any date that I've already booked will not be eligible.

The first I time I met with Kate and Michael, she told me she was wearing orange shoes and he was wearing his Converse for the wedding. At that second, I thought, "Should I play it cool or should I just grovel and profess how much I wanted to shoot their wedding?!" I like to think that I conveyed a happy medium between the two extremes. :) It's at moments like that in which I remember how much I am inspired by the bride and groom themselves and how their trust truly opens a door to creativity on the wedding day. When the Jesusita Fire was in full swing, my heart skipped a beat when I heard that the area near Alice Keck Memorial Park was evacuated. I couldn't imagine what Chandra and Larry were thinking back in Washington, D.C. knowing that they were to get married VERY soon in SB. Fortunately, the fire subsided and the skies cleared. I was so excited to finally make it to WPPI this year. Kristen Grinnell and I drove in and enjoyed the desert landscape as well as a mandatory stop at Big Boy's for a strawberry milkshake. First order of business when we arrived was to hit up the Liberace Museum. If there's one thing I love, it's cheesy museums (I should blog about the Parasitilogical Museum in Tokyo).

WPPI is a multi-day affair but we only came for the trade show. Since we knew this was our first year, we didn't want to get too overwhelmed by the amazing schedule of seminars. We talked to vendors from near and far and played with gadgets galore! I was so excited that I got to hang out with Andrejka Hirsch and Tai Kerbs, but I also got to meet the fabulous Kelly Segre, Jim Minics, and Ronnie Slavin amazing photographers based in Ventura.

All in all, it was a fun weekend and I can't wait for next year's gala!

This is the one time where the adage "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" doesn't apply since I plan on bringing it all back with me!

New Year Resolutions

Does everybody make a New Year's Resolution? I don't really recall ever doing so. So one of my resolutions was to make a resolution. After thinking long and hard, I made these.

1. Make resolutions that I can keep.

2. Get more active. And if I lose weight in the process-yay, me!

3. Visit the family more in Fresno.

4. Plump up that IRA!

5. Be the best aunt EVER.

6. Relax more.

7. Wear more color.

8. Donate to a charity before the holiday season.

9. Learn French.

10. Make 2009 the best year so far in my life. :)

Out with the Old, In With the New

As 2008 ends, I can't help but think about how great it was. New endeavours, new friends, new travels filled up my year. I can only hope that 2009 is even better. Here are a few things that have made 2008 phenomenal.

They say that if you put your request out to the universe, at some point, it does get granted. How else could I explain the '80s themed wedding with Heather and Corbin? I was lucky enough to shoot their first wedding this year on Leap Day and even more fortunate to shoot the "second" BIG day. Even though they have been married for 8 months now, the emotion and love that showed through on October 18th was as if it was the first time. I am so blessed that they chose me to capture ALL their weddings. Thank you, Amber and Israel!!

I have driven by Zuma Beach in Malibu countless times and never once stopped to enjoy the scenery. Turns out that I've been missing the most amazing cliff and rocks on the beach. I was so fortunate to be a part of Amber's surprise wedding for Israel! On Leap Day, Amber surprised Israel with the small wedding in the clock tower of the Santa Barbara Courthouse-just as he had wanted. She's getting her big day in October, he got his small ceremony surrounded by the parents on Leap Day. I feel so blessed to share this AMAZING day with them!

Nothing beats a beautiful day in Santa Barbara when you can go from the beach to the hills to take fun engagement pictures. I love couples that are up for running around, piggy-back rides, and chasing after the seagulls! Cheers to Mark and Mira!!

On Amanda and Erwann's wedding day, they were actually celebrating their 9th anniversary of being a couple. From the Oviatt, an art decor penthouse in downtown Los Angeles, they finally married with a gorgeous view of the city skyline. This is still by far one of my most favorite weddings that I've been lucky enough to be apart.
